Castello Di Volpaia Balifico Vino da Toscana IGT 2008
The 2008 Balifico (Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon) is an intriguing wine. An exotic melange of dark cherry liqueur, smoke, licorice and menthol jumps from the glass. It is rich, powerful and incredibly intense. There appears to be enough density to support the generous oak, but the style is a bit forced. Radda, and Volpaia in particular, is not a part of the Chianti Classico that is inherently suited to making concentrated wines. Mint, flowers and herbs are layered into the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014 – 2028.

Balifico is named after the homonymous vineyard located at 1.350 feet a.s.l., between the celebrated vineyards of Coltassala and Casanova. A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet, it’s one of the first Supertuscans acclaimed by the international press.
